How acoustic comfort is measured in a venue


Acoustic comfort is not a subjective impression. It is a physical quantity measurable with calibrated instruments and protocols recognised by international standards. Here is what happens during a FANA acoustic survey.

The instruments used to measure a venue’s acoustics


The Class 1 sound level metre

The sound level metre measures the sound pressure level (SPL) in decibels. A Class 1 sound level metre is the reference instrument for precision measurements required by Italian and European standards. It calculates the time-averaged weighted level (Leq).

The impulse source

To measure RT60, the technician generates a brief, high-intensity impulse sound — typically by bursting a balloon or firing an acoustic starting pistol. The sound level metre then measures how long it takes for the sound to decay by 60 dB. The measurement is repeated in several positions to obtain a representative value.

Analysis software

The data are processed by specialist software that calculates the RT60 for each frequency band (from 125 Hz to 4000 Hz). The frequencies of human speech fall mainly between 250 Hz and 4000 Hz. The result is a complete acoustic profile of the venue.

Reference standards

ISO 3382

Defines the methods for measuring the acoustic parameters of enclosed spaces, including reverberation time. The international reference standard for all FANA surveys.

UNI 11532

Italian standard for acoustic quality in enclosed environments. Defines acoustic requirements for various uses, including public spaces and food service venues.

ISO 22955

Specifies acoustic requirements for workplaces and public spaces, with objective criteria for sound comfort.

The FANA acoustic survey: step by step

Site visit and data collection

The technician records the dimensions, surface materials and presence of sound-absorbing furnishings. They calculate the volume and estimate the overall absorption coefficient of the venue.

RT60 measurement

With the venue empty or at a representative occupancy level, the technician generates impulse sounds from several positions and measures the sound decay according to the ISO 3382 protocol.

SPL level measurement

The average sound level is measured during normal venue activity. The Leq value is compared against the FANA class thresholds.

Analysis and technical report

The data are processed. The technician produces a report showing the measured values, the acoustic class achieved and, where necessary, recommendations for adjustment.

Issue of certification

If the parameters already fall within class A or A+, FANA certification is issued with a personalised certificate and a plaque for display at the entrance.
